The Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary in Idukki is the habitat of the Great Grizzled Squirrel in India. This species, remaining less than 200, is one of the most endangered species on Earth. It has such a unique location in the Western Ghats that it receives less than 2 months of rainfall a year. The wildlife here along with the deciduous trees make it quite suitable for trekking lovers. Surrounded by beautiful sandalwood forest, here you can see gaur and elephant herds moving freely in this area. Dry deciduous forests, high mountain ranges, and some tropical lands add to the diversity of this sanctuary. On the road from Karimutty to Chinnar, roadside spotted deer, sambar, Hanuman langur, and peacock can be seen.
