Chamundi hill is situated at an altitude of 1065 meters above sea level, and if you are going to visit Mysore, then try to go here too. On the top of the Chamundi hill is the Chamundeshwari Temple dedicated to Chamundeshwari, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati. It used to be the goddess of Wodeyar. This temple was built in the 11th century and repaired in 1827 by the Mysore kings. According to a legend, Mahishasura had the blessing of Brahmaji that he would be killed only by a woman. Apart from this, nothing else could spoil it. After getting the groom, Mahishasura started torturing the gods and sages. Unhappy gods worshiped Mahashakti Bhagwati to get rid of Mahishasura. Pleased with the prayers of the Goddess, Goddess Bhagwati assured him of liberation from the atrocities of Mahishasura. This was followed by a fierce battle between Goddess Bhagwati and Mahishasura. Devi slaughtered all the Asuri army and finally cut Mahishasura's head. Chamunda was named in this form of Devi. The statue of the demon king Mahishasura is placed in front of the temple. Another specialty of Chamundi hill is that there is a five-meter high Nandi statue, which was built in 1659 by carving it with black granite. Atop the hill is another small temple dedicated to Chamundeshwari, and Hanuman, which is open from 7.30 am to 2 pm and 3.30 pm to 6 pm. From Chamundi hill, you can see the beautiful view of the city.
