Talakadu, on the banks of River Kaveri in Karnataka, is a mystic place submerged in the sand of extremely fine quality. Myths and local's stories say Talakadu was buried within the sand due to the curse of Queen Alamelu. History says that when the king of Mysore went with an army against Talakadu to lay hands on the jewels of queen Alamelu, she threw the jewel in the Kaveri river and drowned herself. The legend says that before she died, she gave a curse to Talakadu to be turned into the sand in the 16th century. Talakadu is very famous among tourists for its beautiful temples. The city is known for its five temples, namely Vaidyanathiswara, Pataleshwar, Maruleshwara, Arkeshwara, and Mallikarjuna Temple. All these temples are buried within the sand every year, but now efforts are on to keep them open continuously.
