Delhi National Zoological Park is one of the favourite hangout areas for families, particularly the ones with small kids. Located in the heart of the city, Delhi Zoo is spread over an area of 176-acres and is situated near the Old Fort.
It was inaugurated on 1st November 1956 with the vision of becoming a model for other zoos in India. The zoo is home to about 1350 animals comprising almost 130 species of animals and birds from around the world.
Here, the animals are provided the kind of environment which is close to their natural habitat. The zoo not only provides a home for endangered species but also helps them to breed in captivity.
It also holds Conservation Breeding Programmes for Asiatic Lion, Royal Bengal Tiger, Brow Antlered Deer, Swamp Deer, Indian rhinoceros and red jungle fowl. Eventually, they may once again thrive in the wild.
The National Zoological Park is one of the most interesting tourist spots in Delhi.
School children and groups of families are frequently seen visiting the park for picnics.
The Zoo also maintains a Library and a Cafeteria for the visitors.
