The Mughal Garden is located in the premises of Rashtrapati Bhavan in central Delhi and was built for the wife of Lord Hardinge and was designed by the famous architect, Sir Edwin Lutyens.
The Mughal Gardens are a group of gardens built by the Mughals. Persian style of architecture, this style was strongly influenced by the Persian gardens, especially the Charbagh structure. Rectilinear layouts are used significantly within enclosures of walls.
Some of the distinctive features include pools, fountains and canals inside the gardens. Edwin Lutyens finalized the designs of the Mughal Gardens in early 1917, however, it was planted only during the years 1928–1929. His associate for the gardens was William Musto, Director of Horticulture.
Just as the Rashtrapati Bhavan building has two distinct styles of architecture, Indian and Western, similarly, Sir Lutyens brought together two different horticultural traditions for gardens, the Mughal style and the English flower garden. Mughal canals, terraces and flowering shrubs are beautifully blended with European flowers, lawns and private hedges.
The Mughal garden has been seen with more than 250 varieties including the Biscuits Rose species, which are all known as the Low Rosies. The largest collection of more than 60 different types of Bougainvils, 13 different colored dahlias and marigold flowers. Indian maulsari trees and other types of trees are also seen staring at this planned landscape, while adding it to the Midas touch and turning it into an oasis.
