The Ooty Government Museum was constructed in 1989 to promote the culture of the Nilgiri region. An extensive collection of sculptures, paintings handicrafts, nature and ecology of Udhagamandalam are displayed in the Museum. Besides, Culture, history, the tribes, tribal objects are also on display in the Museum that is establishing the fundamental values of Nilgiri ranges. The Museum educates the locals and visitors about the history and culture of the region. In the Museum, Children and grown-ups can acquire knowledge about the culture. The artifacts and information about the 18 tribes are also on display in the Museum. The focus of the Museum is basically to educate the peoples of Toda tribes, who have a remarkable impact in the Nilgiri region. Only 1100 peoples of the Toda tribe are remaining in their ancestral region. So, it is the main responsibility of the Government to preserve the Tribal inhabitants from extinction. So, efforts are being made to preserve the ancestral heritage of the Tribal people. It is a local faith that the first Toda man was conceived along with a Buffalo by Goddess Teikirshi and her brother. The first Toda woman later developed from the right rib of the first Toda man. The tribe transpired in the late 1700s when the Nilgiris were annexed by the East India Company. They have since their existence being an integral part of Ooty. So, historians, Schollers and researchers must visit the place for information and acquiring knowledge about the ancient tribes.
