The Pykara, the popular gateway, located at a distance of 20 Km from Ooty in the Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu is the largest river in the District. It is considered very sacred by the Todas. The Pykara river rises at the Mukurthi peak. It passes through the hilly tract, generally keeping to North and turns to West after reaching the Plateau's edge. It gets down majestically in a series of cascades, and the last two falls of 55 meters and 61 meters are known as Pykara falls. They are about 20 km from Ooty. The Pykara Lake is about 21 km from Ooty on the Ooty-Mysore road. Boating on the Pykara lake is enjoyable. Pykara village along with a river in the same name also houses a Dam and a power plant. Due to the construction of Dam, the backwater formed a lake which is known as Pykara Lake. It becomes a significant tourist attraction visited by a large number of tourists throughout the year. The spot has everything a person can ask for, right from ambiance to comfort scenic beauty. July and August is the best time to visit Lake. This unique spot must not be missed by the Tourists, photographers, adventure seekers, and nature lovers. A restaurant is also available here. Wenlock Downs, a vast Expanse of a grassy meadow on way to Pykara is a favorite picnic location and is very popular with the moviemakers of this country.
