The oldest and largest sawmill on the continent, Chatham Sawmill is situated in Chatham Island, just 6 Km. away from Port Blair and connected by a bridge.
This 19th-century sawmill is the only sawmill that provides timber for construction work on the Island and exports timber to industries all over the world. The timbers are also used for making furniture. It is guessed that the planks sourced from the mill are used to make crimson wall decorations at the Buckingham Palace in London.
Chatham Saw Mill is regarded as a famous attraction in Port Blair. It has been functioning for more than 100 years. A visit to the mill and the shed can be taken by tourists.
A Museum is inside the Saw Mill which gives details of the geography, geology, and biodiversity of the area.
Since the mill is operational so the place is noisy. Tourists should visit this mill.
A sales counter is here from where you can buy a souvenir made of wood for relatives.
A bomb was dropped here during World War II and a pit still marks the symbol.
