Viper Island is an island of the Andaman Islands. It belongs to the South Andaman district of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The island lies 4 Km west of Port Blair. The name derives from the vessel H.M.S. Viper in which Lt. Archibald Blair came to Andaman and Nicobar Island in 1789.There was a jail in this small Island where Britishers used to keep the convicts and freedom fighters. It has also the ruins of a gallows atop a hillock. The Jail has been transferred to Port Blair when Cellular Jail was constructed. The Jail was used by Britishers to inflict the worst form of torture and hardship on those who tried to free our motherland from the hand of Britishers. The conditions at the jail were such that the place got the notorious name, Vipen chain gang Jail. Those who had challenged the might of the British authority were chained together and confined at night by a chain running through a coupling of irons around their legs. Now, this is old history and the Jail is abandoned. Visit of this Island remember our freedom fighters struggle and sacrifice.
