A twenty-minute ride from Port Blair gets you safely to the former capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. This island was of crucial geographical importance during the British rule in India which is why it is filled with ancient relics and broken-down structures of various Governmental offices, churches, and other significant historical ruins. Ross Island, with a perfect mixture of forest cover and old buildings, bears resemblance to a lost city- something utterly fascinating to the human eye. Cellular Jail is situated on South Andaman Island, one of 572 islands forming Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India. Inhabited since 2000 years, the islands were occupied by Europeans in the middle of the 18th century. A few years later, the British established naval base and a penal settlement on Chatham Island which was later shifted Viper Island. During World War II, the Japanese attacked, bombarded and destroyed the buildings and structures of the Island, finally captured. Japanese have made their inscriptions by making Japanese bunker, visible in Ross Island. At the end of World War II, the Britishers again recaptured the Ross Island. Now the whole island is a museum, visitors go to the Island to see the ruins. Visitors come in large numbers to visit the historical place.
