Dhanushkodi, one of the smallest towns in the world, is 20 km away from Rameswaram, it is only 50 yards length. Dhanushkodi means 'end of the bow', that denotes the legend of Ramayana and Lord Rama. But it has a long 15 km beach that tourists can visit.
The town is covered by Bay of Bengal on one side and Indian Ocean on the other side.
It is believed that there was a beach between Dhanushkodi and Srilanka (only 15 km away from Dhanushkodi), made to reach Srilanka to rescue Goddess Sita from the captivity of Ravana. There was a temple and Railway station here and Railway colony was also here.
After the war, Bibhisana requested Rama to break the bridge, and Rama break the bridge with the end of his bow, that is why the name become Dhanuskodi.
During the cyclone of 1964, the whole town was washed away along with 1800 hundred people. but the temple is still there. and a water tank also seen here. So, this town is a ruin now. People come to see the place for exploring the history of this sacred place.
