Ashoka Pillar with its Four Lion-headed stubs is the creation of the great Emperor Ashoka. Asoka pillar is of great importance. It is rather unfortunate but the total Ashoka Pillar does not stand here now.
The shaft of the pillar can only be seen at the gateway and the crown has been kept in the museum. The figure of these lions was later adopted as the National Emblem of India.
Ashoka's wife was staying in Besnagar very near to Sanchi. One glazed stone pillar and brick and mortar-made stupa was also constructed. Its importance increased a lot when the restoration of the monuments were done in 20th century.
