The Archaeological Survey of India began excavations at Sarnath in 1930 and found many monuments, structures, and ancient artifacts. It is known as an archaeological and uncovered area.
The artifacts found here are on display at the Sarnath Museum. The museum contains the finest specimens of Buddha art dating back from the 3rd century AD to the 12th century AD. The museum has a total of five galleries and two corridors. Sarnath has a wide collection of Buddhist sculptures. The museum has about 6,832 sculptures and artifacts.
The entire building of the museum is made of sandstone with a flat roof.
Sarnath has a deep connection with the development of Buddhism in India. It was here that Gautama Buddha gave the first sermon to his five disciples. At that time, the principles of religion, the four Arya truths, and the Arya Ashtanga Marg appeared to the world.
Later, Emperor Ashoka adopted Buddhism and built many pillars and stupas in North India, some of which are located in Sarnath.
