Dhammek Stupa a Giant stupa located in Sarnath which, is 13 km from Varanasi. It was built in 500 AD in place of a stupa and many other monuments.
It was built by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC. Emperor Ashoka built many stupas during his reign. In these stupas, signs associated with Gautam Buddha were placed. There is also an Ashoka Pillar nearby.
It is believed that the Dhamekh Stupa in Deer Park is the place where Lord Buddha gave the first sermons to his disciples after the attainment of knowledge.
It is the place where he told the concept of the Arya Ashtanga Marg, on which an individual can attain salvation. This stupa was enlarged six times, despite this its upper part remained incomplete.
A Chinese traveler, Xuan Zhang, visited Sarnath in the fifth century. He has written that there were more than 1500 Dharmacharya in the colony and the original stupa was about 300 feet high.
