Rang Ghar is a historical structure of Assam, located in Sivasagar. It was built in the 18th century by Ahom king Swargadeo Pramatta Singha.
It is a 10 meters high royal sports pavilion. The main motive to construct Rang Gharwas is to watch cultural programs and traditional games like elephant and buffalo fights organized during the Bihu festival.
There are two beautiful stone-carved crocodile structures on either side of the entrance of Rang Ghar, and the roof of the main structure of Rang Ghar is like a boat, kept upside down. There is also a trefoil canopy at the center, over the parabolic roof. The exterior of Rang Ghar adorned with floral and geometrical designs, which makes Rang Ghar worth exploring.
The whole structure of Rang Ghar exclusively made of red-baked bricks, a particular variety of rice, and eggs.
This building is a beautiful example of Ahom architecture. When you walk inside the Rang Ghar, you will see series of arches adorned with unique structures. There is also a steep staircase that leads to the top from where dignitaries and the royalties used to watch and enjoy special programs and events.
The Rang Ghar surrounded by a broad ground known as Rupohi Pothar, where earlier bullfights, cockfights, and wrestling are well organized, but now it has been maintained as a manicured field that looks gorgeous from the top of Rang Ghar.
Apart from being a historical building, Rang Ghar is also a wonderful place to visit in Sivasagar. The beautiful structure and the serene surroundings make it a worth visiting place.
