Sibsagar Lake or Borpukhri is the biggest attraction of the city. Its literal meaning is the sea of Lord Shiva, and based on this lake the city was named Sibsagar. This lake is spread over 257 acres, situated at a higher altitude than the city.
There are also three temples on the banks of the lake, which are called Dol in the Assamese language, named Vishnu Dol, Devi Dol, and Shivdol, The Shivdol is the most revered of these temples .
These temples were built in 1734 by Kuvuri Ambika, wife of Assamese ruler Swargadeo Siba Singh.
This lake is surrounded by a deep moat made of mud.
It is the biggest attraction not only Sibsagar but also of Assam. Hundreds of tourists come here every day from across the country and the state.
Along with this, a large number of devotees also come to the temples located on the banks of the lake.
