Lal Chowk, Red Square, the name given to it by a leftist Sikh intellectual BPL Bedi after the Red Square of Moscow, had replaced the Shri Ranbir Ganj(SR Gunj) market of downtown Srinagar in the early 1940s.
Practically it is a marketplace where you can purchase everything, especially Kashmiri Shawls and other Kashmiri Products. Those days communists of Punjab-both Muslims and Sikhs-had a substantial influence on the politics of Kashmir.
An important place for Political and Civil meetings in Srinagar.
As people of downtown began to migrate from the congested old city to newer colonies like Kaak Sarai, Karan Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, Rajbagh, Hawal, and Lal Bazar in the later decades, Lal Chowk due to its equidistance from old and new Srinagar became the central market for all Srinagar-sites.
The substantial footfall of its sub-markets earned Lal Chowk the sobriquet.
Market closes at 8:30 Pm daily.
21 days Lockdown in india may have to be extended: PM Narendra Modi to opposition.
