The Houseboat in Srinagar is an ingenious Idea of the British Resident who was living in the Kashmir Valley during the British era. This Sole Houseboats tradition of gracious bank or shore living originated with the first British residents of Kashmir.
To prevent them from assuming the power, Maharaja of Kashmir forbade the British to own land. Most tourists are attracted to Srinagar by the charm of staying on a houseboat, which provides the unique experience of living on the water in a cedar-paneled elegant bedroom, with all the conveniences of a luxury hotel.
It is so relaxing to spend a few days floating around on a Shikara, the local flat-bottomed boat not unlike a gondola, with love-heart paddles and colorful canopies.
Dal Lake is breathtakingly romantic. Stretching eight by four kilometers, it is flanked by the snow-tipped Pir Panjal range of mountains which rise to 5,425 meters.
The banks are punctuated by sparkling white minarets, willows, and Mughal-planted plane trees. And in summer its surface is ablaze with lilies and pink lotuses, the reflections of the peaks so perfectly defined that sometimes you don't know which way up to hold a photograph of the scene.
Houseboats give you all comforts of a Hotel. From the houseboats, you will get a beautiful view of Dal Lake.
The minimum charges for staying in the houseboat start from Rs 850 per night. Wi-fi connections are there in the houseboats. Dal lake houseboats are not movable, they are fixed in a place. More than 1200 Houseboats are there in the lake.
