Tawang Monastery is 180 km from Bomdila in Tawang district and situated on a mountain at 10,000 feet above sea level. This monastery is also known as Golden Namgyal Lhatse. Tawang Monastery is the largest monastery in India and the second largest in Asia.
It was founded by Merak Lama Lodre in 1860-1861 following the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso.
The main attraction of this monastery is the 28 feet high statue of Lord Buddha and the impressive three-storeyed Sadan.
There is also a giant library, that has a great collection of ancient books and manuscripts. It is believed that this manuscript are dates back to the 17th century.
According to a belief, this place was chosen by an imaginary horse to build the monastery. This place was blessed by the divine horse hence the name Tawang. Ta means horse, and wang means blessed.
Lying amidst the Himalayan ranges, it offers a breathtaking view of the Twang-Chu valley.
The major festivals held here are Choksar, Losar, Ajilamu, and Torgya. Torgya, also known as Tawang-Torgya, is an annual festival held mainly in the monastery.
The best time to visit Tawang Monastery is from March to September. This place strongly recommended for family, solo, groups, and nature lovers.
