Kedarnath is located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 3584 meters above sea level and considered as one of the four Dhams and a holy destination of the Hindus and is the highest altitude of the twelve Jyotirlingas.
The magnificent Mandakini River flows from near the temple.
During summer, a large crowd of tourists visits this shrine to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. The temple is about 1000 years old, and the stairs leading to the sanctum sanctorum, devotees can see the Pali language inscriptions on the walls of the temple.
Kedarnath is full of temples and religious caves that tourists can visit. They are Kedarnath temple, Rudra Cave Kedarnath, Gandhi Sarovar, Shankaracharya Samadhi, Bhairav temple and Vasuki Tal Lake.
Being situated at an altitude of 3584 meters above sea level, it is the most difficult place to reach here out of the four dhams.
The temple opens only for 6 months during summer and remains closed during winters as the climate becomes unfavorable due to heavy snowfall in the region.
During winter the natives of Kedarnath migrate to the lower regions, and the palanquin of Lord Kedarnath is taken to Ukhimath.
