Dasaswamedh Ghat is the most ancient and magnificent ghat of all the Ghats situated on the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi. The history of this ghat is thousands of years old. Dasaswamedh means the sacrifice of ten horses. According to legends, Lord Brahma performed a Yagna here to recall Lord Shiva from exile. It is not clear whether ten horses were sacrificed to call Lord Shiva in this Yagna or ten horses were sacrificed in joy upon their arrival or whether Lord Shiva returned after the Yagna, there is no description of it either. According to legend, in the second century, the sacrificial ceremony was organized here by the Bhara Shiva Naga rulers. Considering the historical significance of this ghat, it is considered to be the most prominent ghat in Varanasi. It is one of the ghats in the city, where tourists visit the most, religious programs are also organized in this ghat. Every morning and evening a grand Aarti is organized here. In the Aarti, the lamp is burnt and floated into the Ganges. It provides a very panoramic view floating of lightened Diwas in the Ganga water.
