Visakhapatnam is a famous port town in the state of Andhra Pradesh, also known as Vizag and the second major city of Andhra Pradesh. Vizag is primarily an industrial city but it is emerging as a famous tourist destination due to its rich history and culture, lush green landscapes, beautiful seaside, and beautiful hills. Visakhapatnam gets its name from Visakha, the god of Shaurya (heroism). The city is situated, amidst the Scenic Hills of the Western Ghats, on its eastern side lies the Bay of Bengal. The city is also called the 'City of Destiny' and Goa on the eastern seaboard. The holy books state that the city of Vizag was ruled by King Visakha Varma about 2000 years ago. The city is also mentioned in Ramayana and Mahabharata. This city came under the kingdom of Kalinga in 260 BC, and then it was ruled by Emperor Ashoka. After this, till 1600 AD, it was under Utkal state. Ruled by the Vengi kings of Andhra and later the Pallava kings. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the Mughals also ruled over here in Hyderabad. Vizag was ruled by the French in the eighteenth century. In the year 1804, there was a fight between the British and the French squadron near the Visakhapatnam port, and the city came under British control. Vizag has emerged as a paradise for travelers. There are many types of resources available to entertain travelers like the beautiful seaside, beautiful hills, natural valleys, and the modern city infrastructure, Vizag is surrounded by hills such as Sri Venkateswara Konda, Ross Hills, and Dargah Konda. On each of these three hills, there are holy sites of three different religions. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva on the Venkateswara hill, the Virgin Mary Church on the Ross Hills, and the tomb of Baba Ishaq Madina, a Muslim saint on the Dargah Konda. Beaches such as Rishikonda Beach, Gangavaram Beach, Bhimali and Yarda Beach are located on the eastern side of the city. Other tourist places include Kailasagiri Hill Park, Sinhachalam Hills, Araku Valley, Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary, Submarine Museum, War Memorial, and Naval Museum, etc. which tourists must-see. You can also go shopping at the famous Jagdamba Center Mall. The transportation system of Visakhapatnam is very well connected to all major cities in India. The best time to visit Vishakapatnam is between October to March when the temperature is between 15 degrees Celcius to 30 degrees Celcius.
