In the 18th century, the ruler of Mysore, Tipu Sultan attacked this place and deployed his artillery unit to the Jain temple built here. The artillery unit is called Battery, due to which the city came to be called Sultan Battery, which became distorted to "Sultan Bathery" in a local accent.

Sultan Bathery is the historical city of Kerala and the major commercial center of Wayanad. Most people earn through tourism and agriculture.
